- Description
- SMAD proteins are TGF-β signaling components that consist of receptor-regulated SMADs (SMAD1/2/3/5/9), a common SMAD (SMAD4), and inhibitory SMADs (SMAD6/7). SMAD6 is a negative regulator of TGF-β and bone morphogenetic proteins. Multiple SMAD6 transcript variants have been found. It suppresses IL1R-TLR signaling and prevents NF-κ-B activation, nuclear transport, and NF-κ-B-mediated expression of proinflammatory genes. SMAD66 also regulates the proliferation and self-renewal of hepatic progenitor cells (HPCs) and neural/neuronal progenitor cells (NPCs).
